Who: Layla and Warren (for Wartheflame)
Where: Romance dressing room, the City, Warren's place.
Why: She made dinner and is hoping to get to reconnect with Warren.
When: Set a few weeks after her original stay with him, looking for her own place to stay with Warren's help. No matter how awkward it might have been the first time around due to forgetting there were other people in the apartment, that were of the male persuasion, and nearly seeing things, or walking out of the bathroom at awkward times. Thankfully, quick reflexes saved them both on those occasions. J/K LOL
Status: Incomplete.
Rating: Pg-13

Layla had made Warren some Fettucini Alfredo, and herself a nice salad along with some tofu for herself. She had worked long and hard on this dinner, wanting it to be perfect. She wanted a chance to get to talk to him, something she felt she hadn't had much of a chance in doing since she got here. So, she was really excited to say the least. Taking a shower, she put on some sweats, and waited patiently for him to get back from whatever it was that he was doing. Watching television, and reading one of his books while she waited for him to get back.

Layla had arrived the day before, and understanding the need to save money and not waste it on hotels and such, Warren had been quick to again open his home to his friend. It had been a bit weird last time around, weird but not in a bad way.

He'd had a meeting at work this day. The neighborhood where the bar was at had gotten a bit bad. One night Warren had busted a guy selling drugs in the men's room, and nearly gotten his head cracked by a steel pipe for his troubles. Probably would have gotten it cracked, if his head wasn't as hard as it was. So now the staff at the bar felt a need to work out what they were going to do, to keep a safe working environment.

Warren wasn't in the best of moods when he came home. The meeting had been a long one, and had basically been about what they wanted to do, and what they could afford to do. At least Warren had gotten his way when he'd asked for more people working security, and not only during the weekends. Which meant he'd be getting more hours, and he could definitely use that.

Opening the door, he took a whiff and... Damn, something smelled good! His mood improved immediately. He spotted Layla curled up on his could with a book. "Hey, Hippie," he said, shrugging out of his jacket and hanging it up. "Smells like you've been busy."

Layla smiled, as she looked up to the door when she heard the rattling of keys in the lock.

"Hey there, Hot Head! Long day at work today?" Smiling at him when he said it smelled good in the apartment. She put a book mark in the book she was reading, placing it on the coffee table as she stood up.

"Yep, doesn't it? I might just have to eat it all on you. I used Mom's special recipe too. I hope you like it?" She walked to the kitchen slowly, and put on a glove before she grabbed for the oven door. Pulling out a small tray of garlic bread that she was keeping warm. Taking some plates out of the cabinets, she started to spoon the food onto a plate for him.

"Go wash up, I'll set the table for us," she went about the kitchen then. Putting out serving spoons, forks, and knives as well as cups too. Taking a pitcher of homemade lemonade from the fridge. She shook her head. "I still cannot believe I had to go out and actually buy lemons to make this!" Pouring them each a glass, after she added some ice to each of them.

This was another of those weird but not bad things. Since coming here, he was hardly used to coming home from work to find a cooked meal, and someone who was volunteering to do the chores.

"Work was tedious and frustrating. Too many things we should do, need to do, and too little money to do them." He sighed. At least they were doing something, and that just had to be enough for now.

He went to splash some cold water on his face to help him clear his mind, and then washed his hands. He came back back just in time to hear her muttering about the lemonade. "You still got that hang-up about making lemons?" he asked, taking a seat at the set table. It was one of those quirks that Warren found sort of amusing.

Layla stopped to lean against the table so that she could actually listen to him fully. Shaking her head, she sighed. "That is terribly frustrating, sure. May be the bar could have like a couple of bands come into play for a little bit of a fundraiser or something? Even if that is impossible, there has to be a way to try to raise some money in order to make the appropriate changes there? How do they plan to rectify the situation if they don't have the right resources to do so?" Even if she couldn't come up with something to help him, she could at least listen to him bitch it out.

Figuring he might need some, Layla put on some coffee, in hopes that it might help wake him up a bit. If not, she could always put it in the fridge, to make iced coffee for later on.

Sighing at his question, she laughed and nodded. "Yeah! I mean..." she reached out her hand looking toward the small plant she got for him, and thought lemon really, really hard. What happened, a long, strong vine grew toward her hand with a juicy red apple on the very end of it. The apple then dropped into her hand. "Like Will said, when life gives you lemons, make apple-juice?" She said with a giggle. Taking said apple, she then cut it up into pieces, and put it into a small bowl. Putting it on the table with the rest of the meal. She could put a couple of pieces in her salad, and he could eat the rest if he wished too?

"It's not so much that the bar needs to do stuff. It's more that the cops aren't doing enough. It's not our responsibility to bust drug-dealers. And, you know, I'd like to be able to be able to walk home at night without being attacked for trying to keep that shit out of my bar." His bar? Well, seemed like someone was indeed feeling responsible for his workplace.

Coffee was going to be needed later. But first: food! When had he last had a good homecooked meal? From someone who actually knew what they were doing? He was going to enjoy this.

When he took the first bite and the creamy taste of parmesan hit his tongue, he actually closed his eyes and sighed with the pure and simple pleasure of good food.

"Right, I see. Well, that seems truly unfortunate. It's not like you aren't skilled, nor schooled in this area though, Warren. I mean, people like us...well, okay, me exist because the police cannot handle, refuse to handle the problems that are happening all around us. That is why we were trained to do what we do, and yeah, it is a dangerous life to live, but you know how it goes. How to protect yourself! I get why you are miffed, but why are you so...I'm not even truly sure what to say here. You seem to want to only live half the life you were trained to do here. Yeah, it sucks that people want to hurt you because it is you that is doing the keep away with these derelicts. But, you, of all people, know how to devise a plan to keep them permanently out of your hair, and away from hurting you in the end. You are just going to have to deal with the back lash for the time being, right? If the cops won't help, can't you help devise something like those community watch people enact, or even something akin to what Curtis Sliwa did, make a group of people who police the place outside of just the bar. Make the neighborhood a bit safer, and thus the bar will become safer in return. You have the skill set, and the knowledge to do so. Why be pissed at the police, when you can make a more proactive plan here?"

Layla spooned out the food for them both, and set his place pulling out his chair for him to sit down and just relax and eat. He should enjoy it, and Layla made it so that there were enough leftovers to last him for a couple of days. Layla smiled at his reaction to his dinner, then she decided to dig into her own salad in turn. Grinning at how happy he seemed to be just then. That was the main reason she did this, just to get to see that one, simple, but happy reaction. He was so tightly wound as of late. He needed to relax some. "I got you some beer too, I wasn't sure if you drank it. Or what you liked, so I got domestic, and dark ale. If you don't drink, well I am sure there is someone you can give it too? Or even just keep it for when you have guests over?"

"Actually, I am looking into a hopefully permanent solution for this. Not sure yet how it'll turn out. I'm sort of reluctant to bring Phoenix out, though. That wasn't what I came here for. Not yet, anyway." Phoenix. The name he'd chosen for himself after graduation, and registered at the Bureau for the day he'd pick up his role as a hero. But Phoenix hadn't really risen yet, and Warren didn't think this was the right time.

"At least I doubt that the guy who tried to bash my head in will come back anytime soon. I sent him running down the streets with a few fireballs on his ass." It had actually been far more serious than that. But for now, over dinner, Warren tried to keep it light.

Hold on, did she say beer? Warren perked up at that. He didn't drink much, but he had developed a taste for beer. He gestured for Layla to stay at the table, and got up himself to fetch a couple of bottles in case Layla wanted one as well. He went with the lager, saving the dark ale for later.

"Thing is..." he started, twisting off the bottle cap. "Liz was there the night of the attack." Which obviously meant that she had seen him hurling fireballs. Yep, that he'd slipped up and revealed his powers to a civilian and was now owning up to it was the reason for the quick and deep gulp of beer that Warren helped himself to as soon as he'd said that.

"Well, okay. I mean, this is your life here. So, albeit for me to judge or to hassle you about it." Layla's eyes went super wide at his comment though, inwardly freaking out. She knew he was resilient, especially after his big fight with Will in the cafeteria all those years ago. Still, the idea of someone trying to harm her friend, her confidant like that made Layla angry, and scared. Scared that Warren was getting himself into something terrible that he couldn't get out of. He was her friend, her best friend and she didn't want to lose him. Not yet anyway. When they were both ancient, and breathing through tubes, and walking with canes was the only appropriate time for their friendship to come to its natural end for the girl.

"Look, Warren...I know you are all big, and strong, and almost cockroach like in your resilience here, but I can't help being freaked a bit here. I mean, that is some serious shit, pardon my language, but I feel it is apropos for the situation at hand. Especially, with you working your powers like that. How did she handle it? I mean, was she okay with it all? She could have been seriously hurt you know? Not by you, but if that guy didn't let up or even came back to find her in order to learn more about you. You need to be more careful, hon. I worry about you, and the people you choose to let into your life as well." Layla nodded when he told her not to get up, she continued to eat as he brought her a beer. Being a teetotaler all her life, Layla had a bit of a fascination with alcohol, just wondering what the big deal was with it all. So, she deemed to try a little bit of it. Grabbing the bottle, she fumbled with the top for a few moments and sighed. "How do you open this blasted thing?"

"She took it well." he reached out to twist off the bottle cap on her bottle as well. "We had a talk when we got home, and the day after. he's not going to be telling anyone." She had secrets of her own, and knew the value in keeping ones mouth shut.

His expression darkened. "She did get hurt," he said, voice low. "The bastard go a hit in on me and I went down for a second. He'd turned on her when I got up. Was strangling her." He sighed and paused for another gulp of beer. "I lost it. Powered up when I could've taken him down with other means." Obviously he cared about this girl. Well, more than that. It was just another of those things he hadn't gotten around to telling Layla about. It wasn't like him to call his friends up and open a conversation with 'Hey, guess what? I've fallen head over heels in love with my next-door neighbor', after all. "She's okay now, though."

"Oh wow, thanks. See, you big burly stud muffins make these things looks so darn simple!" She stated gratefully, taking a small sip of the brew. Making a face between like, and dislike. "Interesting stuff," she stated dryly.

"All right, if you are sure. I trust her if you do." She said with a simple nod of her head, watching him intently.

"Damn, I am really sorry. Is she okay?" Nodding, she smiled. "That is good to know, you seem to care about her very much. To me, anyway. So, that is good to hear."

"Yeah, she's alright. Had a sore throat for a while there, but no lasting damage." Now she was just hell-bent on revenge. Warren wasn't completely sure what he thought about that.

"Turns out you were sort of right, by the way. That day you came to The City? When you worried about being in the way because you thought Liz and I were together? Well, we weren't then, but..." Yeah, he felt sort of silly now, but wasn't one to tell ones friends about stuff like this. And since Layla was the only one he really ever talked about serious stuff with, so...

"That's good to know. Poor girl. Most have been terrifying. I'm really sorry that he got the drop on you both, that had to be terrible." She shook her head, and sighed. What was this world coming too?

"Oh. Oh! Um, well...right. Well, I guess I am happy you finally came to terms with that. Are you happy at least?" She asked a bit dejected, but she kept a smile plastered on her face in order to not revel any of her true feelings on the matter, until she, herself, was sure about how and what she was really feeling. When in doubt, deflect, deflect, deflect. Taking a generous gulp of her beer then.

He shrugged. "Sort of confused. But yeah, guess so." he went back to the plate with all that fantastic food. "Oh, and Hippie?" He started between bites. "Don't get any stupid ideas that you're in the way just because of this? Because you're not." Especially not if she showed up to cook!

No, but really. While he was completely oblivious to that she might have warmer feelings towards him, she was pretty much his best friend. She'd never be in the way.

Layla looked at him, and rolled her eyes then. Continuing to keep that smile firmly in place.

"Uh huh, got that the first time around, Warren Peace. The same time you told me it was too soon to date, and all that jazz. You know, when you ripped my head off almost? Got it then." She took another sip of her beer, but kept up eye contact.

Had he done that? Huh. Then it must have come out wrong. That happened sometimes. But yeah, he did remember being surprised at how upset she had gotten back then.

Change of subject! No more bad stuff at work, or his lovelife! "You decided on where you want to live yet?" If he remembered right, there were places close to the campus, though they were a bit on the pricey side.

She laughed brightly then, and shook her head no. "Not a clue, and I need to choose soonly. Or I am s.o.l. So, I have to figure this out sometime in the next week or so. I have no clue what I am going to do."
